These are used by musicians, application developers, teachers, students, and researchers. These have been used in over published research articles and books. Please let me know if these have been helpful in your research and music projects. They were edited into chromatic scales played note-by-note at pp, mf, and ff dynamic levels throughout the range of the instrument. Because the recordings represent the complete dynamic structure of the instrument, input volume levels were not changed during the recording session.

Some instruments were played with more than one technique, including arco, pizzicato, vibrato, and non-vibrato. With the exception of the piano, all of the instruments were recorded in an anechoic chamber in the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center at the University of Iowa. The room is a 27, cubic foot space 30'x30'x30' that is isolated from the rest of the building. The chamber is further isolated within the "vault" in that its contact with the floor, walls, and ceiling is through a series of springs.

The 36" baffles which fill the floor, walls, and ceiling contribute to sound absorption properties that extend down to 60 Hz. The next phase of the project will be to expand the number of instruments, to systematically capture a broad range of playing techniques, and record small groups of instruments.

Please let me know of other instruments and formats that would be useful to have in this collection. It is very exacting work to maintain a rigorous standard for recording, editing, and hosting a large collection as this. In the past, I have paid for personnel with internal grants and out of pocket.

I am looking for a collection or database of samples of individual notes played on a variety of instruments, available in common audio formats OGG, WAV, etc. At a bare minimum, some kind of piano playing the middle C would do fine. The only samples I currently have are the two piano samples that come packaged with LMMS, but one of them is grainy and the other is very short, which doesn't lend itself well to creating decent-sounding notes of variable length ultimately, I want several audio samples of a given note that are of varying lengths.

Your best bet still is to get a decent commercial sampler with an included sound library. Look for things like Kontakt or Mach Five. Unlocked Kontakt libraries full version not Kontakt Player will give you access to the original samples. This will save you a lot of trouble and the quality you get should be adequate. I'm not sure about the quality of the samples not that it's bad, just didn't have the opportunity to go deep enoughbut licensing terms should accommodate most needs and they've built quite a database over time.

There are four different licenses used on that page, so make sure to know the terms and restrictions some prohibit commercial use, some require attribution. You can filter by license using the right sidebar. If giving attribution under CC-BY 3.

Tahjeet Tahjeet. There are large stores of samples packaged and delivered with magazines, online electronic music sites etc. DrMayhem, do you have any idea where though? Is there a reason you don't just get a good sample based software MIDI instrument?

I am trying to write software that uses the sounds, and I currently have a working system that runs off of OGG samples; the only problem is that the length of the notes is impossible to alter programmatically. To integrate MIDI support would probably end up being a nightmare.

I may have to do it, but I'd rather not. Ah, I'd think you could probably find a MIDI library that would allow fairly easy integration though. Probably easier than trying to manipulate OGG samples.
